BronxFit is an extraordinary three month program designed to help those just beginning a journey towards better health! Created for those with a limited knowledge of how to properly exercise and fuel the body to optimize weight loss and strengthening, BronxFit will take you step by step through the process of getting in shape. The structured curriculum includes semi-private weekly sessions with a nutritionist and personal trainer, an unlimited 3-month WSPT Gym Membership, and full access to all of WSPT’s fitness classes. The benefits of BronxFit are wide-ranging, helping control medical conditions such as obesity, arthritis and diabetes.
Barbara, a participant of BronxFit, found the personal training to be especially helpful. She expressed that the trainer, Jason Bonilla, really pushed and encouraged the class, while pacing the sessions so the students would remain comfortable. The goal of BronxFit is to teach members how to approach wellness in their personal lives, outside of the gym setting. Another participant, I.C., felt that the combination of nutritional education and personal training achieved just that; she is now considering a permanent wellness membership, and has definitely committed to making wellness a part of her life.

In an effort to further promote WSPT’s passionate involvement in the health of the Bronx, WSPT proudly hosted the 3rd Annual Wellness Expo on October 13th.
The event attracted over 100 attendees; existing patients and members of WSPT, their friends and families, and newcomers. Once people arrived, they were given full access to all the Expo had to offer. This was not just about Physical Therapy, but about educating those in attendance on overall health. There were 15 exhibitors at the event. Ten of the exhibitions were by individuals educating those present on spinal injuries, orthopedics, preventative care, nutrition and sleep therapy. WSPT also provided advice on how insurance can be used most effectively in order to receive the greatest benefits in a time when healthcare is most needed; many people do not understand their plans and therefor might be weary of seeking out preventive medical care.
Members arriving were greeted by our friendly staff, and given a free bag of Popchips, a delicious and healthy alternative to fried or baked potato chips. Once inside the venue, attendees were welcome to receive free Physical Therapy screenings. Anyone could approach our talented PT staff with an ache or pain and receive an assessment on any body part or condition. There were also free five minute massages provided by Jason Bonilla, a licensed Massage Therapist who has been devoted to WSPT for years.
Possibly the biggest success of the night was the showcasing of all the group exercise classes offered at WSPT: pilates, yoga, tai chi, hip hop core and Zumba. The group TRX class utilized all of the innovative and effective equipment. Lilibeth’s baseline class, a class geared towards the fitness beginner, or those with serious injuries, was a great success and helped encourage many of our current physical therapy patients to join the wellness program, reinforcing that WSPT is a familiar and safe place for those who are insecure about beginning a fitness regimen. The Director of Operations here at WSPT, Allan Torres, taught a self-defense class for women. Besides the regular choke holds, Allan decided to use props such as a pocket book, training participants of the class how to protect themselves should they fall victim to a real life assault.
Nicole Bernadette, WSPT’s Wellness Coordinator, was on-hand to answer any wellness questions and promote the BronxFit program. She quizzed attendees’ knowledge of basic nutrition by providing a food label, and asking them to guess which food the label belonged to. Many found it was a lot more challenging than they had anticipated. BronxFit has an element of nutritional counseling in it, and learning the proper was to feed and fuel your body not only helps one heal after an injury, but reach their fitness goals.
The Wellness Expo was a huge success. WSPT set out to expose the community to all the facility has to offer, and to thank theBronxfor being such an amazing supporter of WSPT as a leader in the Physical Therapy field. Since the Expo, there has been an increase in the fitness classes, as participants got to see that exercise can be rewarding and, most importantly, fun. WSPT hopes to continue growing and expanding, always keeping an eye out for new and fresh ways to help keep you healthy!

On August 1st, 2011, WSPT’s Executive Director and founder, Daniel Seidler, appeared on “Healthy Wealthy & Smart” with host Karen Litzy. Karen’s goal is to highlight great Physical Therapists from all over the world and to educate the public, and other medical professionals, on what it is physical therapists actually do. The program revealed how and why WSPT stands apart in the Physical Therapy field.
Click below to listen!!!!!
The main focus of the interview was all of the community outreach programs Danny has initiated at WSPT. Danny has worked very hard to get to know the population of the Bronx: the medical conditions that affect the residents, and what causes those specific issues to be prevalent. He acknowledges there is a general lack of education concerning a lot of preventable conditions. Utilizing the supportive medical community at Hutchinson Metro Center, WSPT organized five doctors from all different specialties to host a Diabetes seminar for 125 attendees from the area. The attendees greatly benefited from the array of medical knowledge that covered the effects of diabetes from all angles; WSPT contributed information on diabetic neuropathy, a condition that can cause weakness, pain, tingling, and loss of feeling in feet, hands, and other parts of the body.
BronxFit is also a very carefully designed program to help address the beginner’s anxiety as they kick off a healthy lifestyle. BronxFit came about as a way to help discharged patients transition their physical therapy regimens into real life. A lot of patients were expressing to Danny that they were uncomfortable joining a gym where they were not familiar with the equipment or the staff. At WSPT, it has always been a goal to create a family environment for patients. By joining BronxFit, members have full access to the gym, including the Hydroworks pool, a supervised exercise program, weekly meetings with a personal trainer and nutritional counselor. Participants learn the basics about fitness and nutrition; this is not a weight loss program, but a lifestyle change.
WSPT is heavily involved with the Arthritis Foundation. The Arthritis Foundation reached out to WSPT, knowing it had such close ties to the community, a community that is largely affected by arthritis. WSPT and it’s staff have participated in the Arthritis Foundation’s NYC Walkathon for the past three years, where they distributed information on local resources for those suffering from arthritis, as well as encouraging those in attendance to come join WSPT’s other efforts, such as year-round fundraising and educational workshops.
The South Bronx United Soccer Club, as well as other local sports teams, have become a part of WSPT’s growing family. WSPT treats players and coaches Pro-Bono, going to the schools to teach about sports conditioning, as well as treating players in the office should they suffer an injury. In fact, one member of the South Bronx United Soccer Club is even volunteering at WSPT – an example of how WSPT has helped cultivate a dedicated community.
Monthly, Danny will do educational seminars for senior citizens through Regional Aid for Interim Needs, (R.A.I.N.). He will go out to a facility and talk to a generation that did not benefit from the emergent resources of preventive care. Each session addresses one specific body part, like the knee, and how one might avoid injury, or how to best rehabilitate after an injury.
According to Karen Litzy, WSPT has not lost sight of the bigger picture. So often, Physical Therapists focus on the patient’s short-term recovery. Danny’s vision, the inspiration behind his departure from Einstein Hospital and the impetus to begin his own practice, was to change a patients well-being altogether. Danny does not believe the care of a patient should end after physical therapy has been completed. He believes it is a therapist’s duty to truly change that patient’s life. By offering programs such as BronxFit, hosting educational Seminars, Danny is transforming the very definition of Physical Therapy.

It's the time of the year again when school's out and teens are looking for jobs. As a contributor to the SYEP(Summer Youth Employment Program) and the Bronx youth community, WSPT hired two hardworking teens from the Bronx, Isaiah Hollins(16) and Melvin Olivo(18) and provided them with "real world" job experiences.

With WSPT being his first job, Isaiah Hollins plans to become a physical therapist or a graphic designer two polar opposite professions, when he grows up. When asked to sum up his experience here at WSPT, Isaiah said, "I enjoy interacting with different patients, learning about their conditions and helping them overcome their physical condition." Fingers cross that he chooses to become a physical therapist as his profession.
As a graduate from Bronx School of Law Government and Justice, Melvin Olivo plans to become a computer technician whenever he grows up. Melvin had this to say when asked about his experience here at WSPT:
"I enjoy having the opportunity to work with the physical therapist in assisting treatment to their patients. I also enjoy working with such a great, supportive and welcoming staff."
